Recharging electric vehicles

What is important to know to understand the world of electric mobility? How does it work and what is the recharging process?

As in traditional combustion cars, electric vehicles need energy to move autonomously. Traditional vehicles have a fuel tank and electric cars have an energy tank called a battery. This battery is refilled, to call it somehow, with electrical energy. When it empties we need to refill it with energy to have autonomy again.

This process is done at a charging point. Depending on the type of electric vehicle, its battery and the speed at which it is able to charge the battery, there are several recharging systems.

Types of Batteries

Types of recharge

The Recharging Type is a non-scientifically parameterized designation that electric vehicle users have been using based on the recharging time. We’ve all heard of slow, normal, semi-fast, fast, ultra-fast, etc…

It is really the Recharge Mode that can scientifically determine to some extent the speed, that is, together with the characteristics of the charger and the particularities of each vehicle.

In short: Not all vehicles can charge in all modes and therefore at any speed.

Recharging modes

The batteries of an electric vehicle have four operating modes of charging. Charging modes are concerned with the level of communication between the vehicle and the charging infrastructure and the control of the charging process. The greater or lesser control of the loading process can allow you to see the status, stop, resume, schedule the process and even program it. Depending on the infrastructure of the network, it can also allow electricity to be dumped into the network. Depending on the mode, the infrastructure works with alternating current or direct current.

Types of Connectors

The connectors are the terminations that have the cables or power hoses that connect the charging point and the battery of the electric vehicle. Based on the mode, security and communication there are several types of connectors.

Charger Models

Chargers are the devices that are placed in the charging infrastructures to supply and manage the process. There are several manufacturers of chargers and they have different models available designed for all charging modes.

DESCRIPTION:

The ETECNIC CITY charging station has been specially conceived for an urban installation. Thus, it features an anti-vandal protection that makes it suitable for outdoor environments.
These equipment present a current inlet according to the IEC 62196-2 standard, allowing to charge in mode 3 (IEC 61851), guaranteeing a secure charging process. In addition, the charging station has a domestic input to charge in modes 1 and 2. Both inputs feature a cable retention and blocking system in order to avoid its disconnection from a non-authorised user.
The ETECNIC CITY charging station is available in both single and three-phase versions, with an output power ranging from 3.7 to 22 kW. In the event of a grid outage, ETECNIC CITY stations have a battery which ensures the correct performance of equipment during 1 hour.
Thanks to their communication capacities, it is possible to identify the users and to charge them according to the established rate, by using a software from Ingeteam or from a third party.

FEATURES:

– Vehicle charging in modes 1, 2 and 3 (IEC 61851).
– Local identification through a RFID card.
– Power and energy measurement through a MID counter.
– Restricted access for non-authorised users.
– Independent operation if a grid outage occurs.
– Illuminated state indicator.
– Multi-language LCD display with keypad.
– Possibility of programming a deferred charging.
– Output power regulation.
– Communication with other charging stations and Control Centres.
– It supports OCPP protocol.
– Anti-graffiti protection painting.

SOFTWARE & COMMUNICATIONS

It is possible to interconnect the ETECNIC CITY charging station with up to ten other different ETECNIC stations by adding a RS-485 hardware. It is also possible to remotely access the equipment by adding an Ethernet or GPRS/3G hardware and integrating the charging stations into a control centre. The ETECNIC charging stations support the OCPP protocol and they can be integrated into most of the charging managers’ control systems.

ETECNIC ROAD

DESCRIPTION FEATURES SOFTWARE & COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT

DESCRIPTION:

The ETECNIC ROAD charging station series have been designed for rapid charging in public areas. They permit the vehicle charging process in direct current at a great power, ensuring the maximum security, simplicity and speed.
These charging stations transmit the power directly to the vehicle’s battery, resulting in a greater efficiency of the charging process at a shorter time. For a 50 kW output power, charging times move around 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the vehicle model and the kind of battery.
Ingeteam has designed the ETECNIC ROAD charging stations thanks to its wide experience as a power converter manufacturer, using high efficiency IGBTs. The steel enclosure guarantees a greater resistance under adverse weather conditions. At the same time, its low acoustic emissions while operating makes the INGEREV ROAD suitable also for closed places, such as garages or residential areas.
